covering an area of nearly 65,610 sq. km
this teardrop shaped island is only around 31 km
from the coast of the sub-continent of india
sri lanka is situated in strategic sea trade routes
and has been an important center in the mixing of cultures
- they're all mixed up - so, naturally, they read this blog...
there are people of all religions - buddhism, islam, hinduism
and christianity - though buddhism is the most widely
practiced religion in the small country
some of the important attractions in sri lanka
include the exquisite beaches, the vast forested areas
and odd mountain peaks that rise above these forests
there are in all six UNESCO recognized world heritage sites
- were the UN has deemed these sites 'worth the drive'...
in sri lanka you have the galle, kandy, sigiriya,
anuradhapura, polonnaruva and the dambulla cave temple
it's true only locals know about these places
most westerners just end up at the hotel pool or hooters
though tourism has taken a big hit after the big tsunami hit
the country dug itself out, hosed off and has welcomed
nearly more than a half a million tourists in 2011
- that's as many visitors as the 7-11 next to legoland gets
colombo is the largest and the most popular city
but the administrative capital is situated in a place some
miles away in an area known as sri jayawardenapura kotte
this city is mostly visited for its heritage buildings that are
today employed as government offices
however, nothing gets done in these government offices
government workers can't tell people where they are
because no one can pronounce the town's name
colombo, on the other hand, offers far more attractions
some of which are considered to be real landmarks
the twin towers, the old colombo lighthouse
jami ul-alfar mosque and a brand new discount mini-mosque
these, then, are among the most renowned attractions
so really, how much fun could this place possibly be...
