GRAMMY, NO SO FUNNY ANYMORE

the grammys are on cbs tonight

when it comes to the grammys we seldom think of comedy

unless it’s some on-stage incident when somebody screws-up

still, year after year comedians take home that very

special golden gramophone and join the ranks of legends

including george carlin and steve martin and richard pryor

in 1959 the first comedic prize went to a rodent serenade

called 'the chipmunk song'

but the next year, things changed when the prize went to

a very funny man named shelley berman, he was the first

comic to win a nonmusical comedy grammy, for his 1959

album 'inside shelley berman'

in 1961, comedian bob newhart bested every musical

offering to take the top grammy prize of album of the year

remember his album 'the button-down mind of bob newhart'

berman is quoted discussing the then-importance of the

comedy album

'there was a time when it was phenomenal,

when it suddenly became a very important medium

but tv took over, and the album performance lost its charm

i don’t think it’s in vogue, there are too many other ways

to be seen and heard'

that's right shelley, who listens to comedy without the pictures

i read it for the articles...

enjoy the show folks, it's a lot of songs, sung by singers

that i've only heard while at red lights here in long beach

who are this year's nominees...

  • Weird Al Yankovic for Alpocalypse

  • Patton Oswalt for Finest Hour

  • Louis C.K. for Hilarious

  • Kathy Griffin for 50 & Not Pregnant

  • The Lonely Island for Turtleneck & Chain

  • and this years grammy goes to: weird al
