the heat index or humiture is an index that combines
air temperature and the relative humidity
remember: relative humidity is always relative
it is an attempt to determine the human-perceived
equivalent temperature, which is different than animal temps
or, in layman's terms: how hot it feels
the human body normally cools itself by perspiration
which evaporates and carries the heat away from the body
- thus it's good to sweat like an animal
however, when the relative humidity is high
the evaporation rate is reduced, so heat is removed slowly
causing it to retain more heat than it would in dry air
measurements have been taken based on subjective
descriptions of how hot subjects feel for a given temperature
and humidity, allowing an index to be made which relates
one temperature and humidity combination to another
at a higher temperature in drier air
so as with most scientific stuff, this stuff is all just guess work
i know that when the thermometer sez 115 - i'm hot
and i sweat like an animal, i think it's closest to a pig
so, understandably living in the desert has it draw backs
but on the other hand
when everybody is walking around wet
it ain't all that bad ;-p
